The Red Cockroach takes the proven, fishy silhouette of the classic Cockroach pattern and adds a bold trigger point for days when predators want something easier to spot. With its deep red body, dark barred wing and subtle flash, this version suggests a wounded baitfish, a gill-flare “hot spot”, or a stressed morsel being swept along a tide line; exactly the sort of cue that makes tarpon, snook and other inshore hunters switch from following to eating.

This fly carries a sleek red head with painted eyes, a red-and-black shoulder, and a barred, mottled overwing that gives a very natural baitfish profile while still offering strong contrast.

The Red Cockroach is all about contrast and visibility without losing realism. The barred wing breaks up the outline like real fins and scales, while the red underbody provides a confident target in glare, shade and slightly coloured water. It’s a superb choice when fish are cruising but not committing, or when you need your fly to stand out in broken light.

How to fish it

• Tarpon: short, steady strips with pauses (let the wing breathe)
• Snook: sharper strips tight to structure to trigger an ambush
• If fish follow, slow the retrieve and lengthen the pause; the materials pulse on the hang.
