About the Cockroach Saltwater Fly
A true flats classic with a modern edge, the Cockroach is a highly reliable tarpon and snook fly designed to imitate the dark, buggy profiles that predators routinely pick off in mangroves and backcountry water. This version is tied with a slim, natural silhouette, a mottled “roachy” wing and just a touch of flash; perfect when fish want something believable rather than loud.
This pattern has a tapered black head with painted eyes, a dark-to-amber/brown shoulder, and a barred, speckled wing that reads like a small baitfish, shrimp or terrestrial insect depending on how it’s retrieved. The result is a versatile, confidence fly that looks alive even at rest.
Fishing Tips:
Why it works
The Cockroach is all about profile and suggestion. The barred wing creates natural contrast and movement, while the darker head and shoulder give the fly a strong focal point that fish can track in glare, shade and broken light. It’s especially effective when tarpon are cruising slowly, laid up, or when snook are sitting tight to cover and want an easy meal.
