When should I fish with the Mohican Mayfly?

This graph shows trends of when fly fishermen use the Mohican Mayfly to fish with and what hooks are most popular throughout the fly-fishing season.

About the Mohican Mayfly Trout Fly

The Mohican Mayfly is a high-floating, ultra-visible dry designed to imitate the adult mayfly during a hatch. It’s built to sit proud on the surface film, so you fish it confidently as a top-of-the-water pattern rather than messing about subsurface. It is great imitation of adult mayfly!

Fishing Tips:

When to use it

  • Peak mayfly season (May, into early June)
  • Fish it during a visible hatch (duns coming off)
  • Or when trout are looking up but not taking naturals confidently
  • Early hatch: fish it static (dead drift dun)
  • Mid hatch: you can add very slight twitches to suggest a struggling insect
If you’re early or late in the hatch, you may need to switch to nymphs or spinners, or even fish as a dropper with a nymph below the surface. When duns are coming off, this is prime time.

Presentation is everything

  • Fish it dead drift like a natural mayfly dun
  • Cast slightly upstream and allow it to float back naturally
  • Avoid drag at all costs, as mayflies don’t skate about
Because the Mohican sits high and is easy to see, it’s ideal in broken water where tracking a low-riding fly is difficult.

Where to target

  • Rising fish (obvious but key)
  • Slower glides and crease lines
  • Just off faster water where trout sit and pick off duns
If nothing is rising, you can try blind over likely lies, as big mayfly patterns often pull fish up.
