When should I fish with the Hawthorne Hopper?

This graph shows trends of when fly fishermen use the Hawthorne Hopper to fish with and what hooks are most popular throughout the fly-fishing season.

About the Hawthorne Hopper Trout Fly

The Hawthorne is ideal for use on sunny spring days when hawthorn flies flit along the hedgerows and among low bushes. Hawthorne flies are the first of the terrestrial insects to cause a worthwhile rise.

Although best between April and the end of May it is also successful through the summer when black gnats are on the water.

The Hawthorne Hopper is to the average fly fisherman a large gnat with two dangling hairy legs.

This dressing is a very fair imitation and works well, when the trout are in the mood.

Expert Tip:

On sunny spring days hawthorn flies flit alone the banks and if there is a good breeze, particularly on exposed lakes, very many of these large flies end up on the water. These are the first of the terrestrial insects to cause a worthwhile rise.
